Stand Among Friends is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization that promotes opportunities for people with neurological disabilities to live a life without limits and experience the highest degree of independence and success in their communities. Stand Among Friends provides service and support through its comprehensive Web site, television programming, video resources and through the development of models and research design to improve quality of life daily.
In 1992, Shawn Friedkin, Founder and President of Stand Among Friends,
was in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. The accident left
Shawn searching for many answers which were difficult to find and often unavailable.
Frustrated with mounting questions and the lack of resources, he established a resource
and guidance center for all people in similar situations. Stand Among Friends was the
result.
In 2006, Stand Among Friends opened its Center for the Study of Neurological Disabilities on the campus of Florida Atlantic University (FAU). The Center coordinates practical research efforts to develop new products and services for the persons with neurological disabilities so that those affected may lead stronger and more productive lives. Stand Among Friends is the only non-profit organization located on the campus of FAU.
